PetTalk Shar Pei with Skin Problems PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk
Dear Christa
You sound as though you have already worked very hard on this one and are well aware of the difficulties!! Presumably you have already made many visits to you own vet on account of this problem, and you should certainly keep that line of communication well and truly open. The truth of the matter is that this problem is unlikely to go away and that anything that is done will probably only keep things at bay. It will probably be a lifelong project for you and your dog. This arises because of the characteristics of Sharpei skin and their immunological differences from other breeds. Presuming that there are no parasites present-and you seem to have thoroughly checked that one-then you need to just keep going with shampoos very very regularly (possibly even daily). Antibiotics may be helpful but should not be used all the time. The best shampoos to use are only really available on prescription and so you should discuss these with your vet. There are several preparations available, with differing compositions, some of which may be more effective than others. Thus find the best by trying them in turn if necessary but be certain that you use each one thoroughly before rejecting it. I hope this is helpful. It is always daunting when you have a problem which is distressing to an animal but which will not actually go away but only be managed.
