I would agree that dew claws must have some use, although my dobe doesn't seem to have a problem with the rawhide bones he is so crackers about. I have had Weimaraners to old age and have not seen problems, as with the rottie I owned until 13yrs. Sadly I lost my first Dobe at three to leukemia, and my present one is only two. I think it would be very difficult to establish if docking causes problems in older dogs as so many dogs develop back/hip problems in later years, particularly larger breeds such as GSD's Labs etc. Nevertheless, I would be very interested in any research that has statistics to offer.
