PetTalk Weimaraner with Bleeding Claws PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk
Dear Carolina,
What you describe with your 2 year old Weimaraner sounds slightly unusual. A young, healthy bitch should not have nails thatsplit so easily and should be able to run to her hearts content. Mind you, I am not sure how long you mean when you say "long distance runs" ! Next time you are at your vets with her, ask them to examine her claws in case there is some defect causing the problem. Is she on a complete, balanced diet for a young active dog ? Sometimes brittlenails can be a sign of a deficiency in the diet. Or there may be a basic problem with her claws. Have you tried running her on grass, which should not cause such a problem ? If you cannot find an underlying cause and you are restricted to road work, there are various different types of dog boots made nowadays besides thermal ones, which may be worth looking into.
