Hello Maureen, There are certainly different types of drops and ointments that can be used in rabbits eyes. It obviously depends on what the underlying problem is. Chloramphenicol is an excellent antibiotic for eye infections and has been used for many years. There are various other antibiotics that can also be used in eyes, just like in human medicine, some are licensed for use in rabbits, others are not. You need to speak to your own vet if you are worried to find out what they think is the best treatment. Some infections will take a long time to clear up, so you may need to stick with the same antibiotic if it is starting to work. There are eye drops with anti-inflammatories in them, or a combination of antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, but your vet will need to decide what is best for your rabbit. Sometimes in rabbits an eye infection is due to an underlying problem with tear drainage into the nose. This is often caused by overgrown roots of the cheek teeth which press on the tear duct and cause a blockage.It would be worth speaking to your vet to see if they need to do some more tests or a further examination on your rabbit, or try a different treatment, but Chloramphenicol is one of the best eye antibiotics there is available.
