PetTalk Puss who is dragging her bottom along the carpet PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk
Dear Debs, If your cat does not normally perform this delightful behaviour after her "toilet" then something has changed to make her startdoing it now at 11years old! She may have a sore bottom { i.e. if she is a bit constipated } or something just inside her anus could be irritating her, or she could have full anal glands. Anal glands are two little sacs either side of the bottom which secrete a foul-smelling brown substance we assume is to do with scent. Full anal glands are the most common reason why dogs dragtheir bottoms and although less often a problem in cats, it can occur. The anal glands are supposed to empty themselves onto the motion as it passes out, but sometimes things go wrong and they get overfull and very irritating for the poor animal. They need to be emptied manually by a vet - one of our most favourite jobs ! Worms are often cited as a cause of bottom-dragging, but inreality, it is not that common a cause in practice. It would be worth worming her and giving her a little bit of oil in her food, or tuna in oil to "ease" the motions out a bit better and see if that helps to ease herproblem. Is she moulting a lot and swallowing the fur and it is having problems getting out the other end ? If she is still having problems then take her to your vet sothey can examine her bottom and check out those anal glands. Good luck,
Maeve Moorcroft MVB MRCVS
