PetTalk Is this sore lump a blocked anal gland? PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk
Dear Neal,
I am sorry not to get to you sooner about your dogs lump. You have probably been to the vet by now and have had some treatment. It sounds like you were treating it the correct way anyway by bathing it slightly salted warm water is very good on any sore areas on dogs - it is a very mild safe antiseptic }. Blocked anal glands are very irritating and dogs will often chew at an area near their tail as they cannot get quite to the anal gland. You would not normally see an actual lump. If it is an analgland abscess, then this is very painful and he will need antibiotics and it may need to be lanced, if it has not already burst. Dogs will sometimes chew near their tail for other reasons { itchy skin, a flea , etc. } but the vet will check for the cause. Hope he is feeling better already,Maeve Moorcroft MVB MRCVS( PetPlanet Vet }
