Puss with wounds on his neck PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk |

Dear Kelly, I would not recommend putting hydrogen peroxide on an open wound - it is strong stuff ! The only time I have used it is to get blood-staining off an animals fur or to flush a wound in an unconscious animal. The best home treatment for any wounds is to bathe them with warm water with some salt in it { only a weak solution - about 1 teaspoon in 1 pint of water }. This is a weak saline solution which will not sting - it is a safe, natural antiseptic { tears have salt in them }. As cat bites tend to be very small, deep puncture wounds, there is normally no value in putting ointment on them, as it will not get down into where it would be needed anyway. It is true that if your cats bites deeply, there is a risk of infection and an abscess developing, as most cats carry nasty bacteria in their mouths. In this case they need a strong antibiotic, which really should not be used without your vet prescribing a suitable one. If your cat is only play-biting, then you will probably get away with bathing as I have described. If it is a nasty bite, an abscess will come up very quickly and he would be better being seen by your vet anyway. Hope he does not get picked on too often,Maeve Moorcroft MVB MRCVS{ PetPlanet Vet )
