PetTalk Bad Arthritis in Older Dog PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk
We have an average sized mongrel dog, named Katie who is 12 or 13 years old. We inherited her last April as my dad died. Katie had a very serious road accident several years ago and has a metal pin in one of her back legs. She now has very bad arthritis and at times can hardly walk. She has been to our vets about this. We give her a cod liver oil capsule daily, she has a teaspoon of Cortaflex daily, plus painkillers as necessary. Is there anything else we can do. We love her dearly and want her with us as long as possible, without prolonging her suffering. When do we decide enough is enough? She is fine apart from the arthritis and eats, sleeps well and is generally happy. She gets excited when we come in and even rolls around on the floor. I must admit that she seems worse in the cold weather, but her mobility does seem to have deteriorated rather a lot in the last few months. Any help, advice, reassurance would be most welcome.YoursBrenda Greaves
