Cat with a Swollen Rectum PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk |

Dear Cat Owner, You will be glad to hear that cats do not get hemorrhoids !! You did not say how old your cat was, but there are various possibilities as to what could be causing the blood. If he does not go out then it will not be due to a fight or an injury. The most likely cause is an upset gut especially in very young or very old cats } - they may or may not get diarrhoea as well, but the colon can get inflamed due to something that they have eaten and little blood vessels can burst, so you see some blood from their bottom. They need to be starved initially for a day and then given a very light diet such as chicken or white fish. But he will need to be seen by your vet, as you were planning, to make sure of the cause. Sometimes an older cat could have a little polyp inside their rectum that could cause similar signs, or severe constipation could lead to straining and bleeding. It is not uncommon in male cats to get an urinary problem such as cystits or crystals in their urine - both of which can lead to spotting of blood - so it could be that the blood was from his penis instead. {Cats bottoms can look odd and be perfectly normal !!} In this case he needs to be seen by a vet sooner rather than later to start treatment. hope this helps, Maeve Moorcroft MVB MRCVS { PetPlanet Vet }
