PetTalk How long will my puppy have roundworms? PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk
Dear Tiana,
Roundworms can be quite difficult to get rid of in a Pup. First you need to make sure that it is roundworms that your pup has, as you do not normally see them in the faeces unless you have just wormed them andthey pass out the dead adults. Tapeworms are little short white worms like grains of rice that come out on their own. These need a different wormer to kill them. But most pups have roundworms and not tapeworms { Theyare long like spaghetti } You need to worm them with a really good wormer like Panacur every 2 weeks if they are less than 12 weeks and then every month until they are 6 months to be on the safe side. Some Petshop wormersare not very effective and you would be best getting one from your vet { if they have seen her as a pup you should be able to buy them over the counter - at least in the UK you can },. You also need to make sure that you are giving her the correct dose - you will need to weigh her each time you dose her. The eggs that pass out are microscopic and pups will re-infect themselves by licking their bottom, walking on their faeces and licking their paws, etc. which is why it can take a while to get rid of themall. Because of the public health risk from these roundworms it is very important you make sure she has been adequately dosed with an effective liquid/paste/granule wormer. The "shots" you mention do not do anything tokill worms. Hope this helps clarify the situation,
