Scottie who has Addisons Disease PetPlanet Vets PPAdmin pettalk@petplanet.co.uk |

Dear Scottie owner, I am sorry to hear about your dog having Addison's. It is such a strange disease and not one we see that commonly in practice. I am not aware of any treatment other than tablets at the present time. The factthat the adrenal glands are under-active and do not make enough glucocortocoids {steroids} means that no type of surgery is effective. The only way to help is to try to replace what his body is no longer able tomake enough of, which are the naturally occurring steroids, which he needs to live. It is one of the few cases where steroids tablets really are the very best treatment, so I would not worry about giving them to him. When they have a collapsing bout {Addisonian Crisis}, then they normally need to go onto intravenous fluids to correct the dehydration and imbalances in their blood, but day to day, they need their tablets.Good luck with him,Maeve Moorcroft MVB MRCVS{ PetPlanet Vet }
